SOL18: 20th Century Reading Revisited
Posted on March 19th, 2018
A few thoughts upon checking the mailbox and discovering the print book I ordered:
I love my Kindle App–really, I do.
Long line at the check-out?
No problem.
Stuck in the waiting room at the doctor’s office?
No problem.
Facing a three-hour ride to visit relatives?
No problem.
Change your mind half-way there and want to read a different book?
No problem
But wait…
There’s just something comforting about an old-fashioned book.
The feel of the paper as I run my hand up across it to turn the page…
Finding that passage to reread by eyeing the edge of the book. Wasn’t that about a third of the way through? Hmmm… not quite, maybe back a few more pages. Yes! Here it is.
Marking your place with the dust jacket.
Underlining that excellent sentence.
Drawing a star by a line you want to remember.
Writing notes to yourself in the margins.
Picking up an old favorite and flipping through to those starred pages.
Best feeling ever?
Admiring that entire wall of print books in the living room,
Reassured that there will be plenty to read …
Even if the Internet goes down!
I still love to hold an “old fashioned” print book. There is something so comforting about it. At times, I also love my Kindle-easy to hold as in very light, small to pack–you know.
The last two lines were a perfect and humorous way to end this slice! I really enjoyed reading it.
Amen! I wholeheartedly agree on both the Kindle bits and the printed page bits.
We have plenty of the old-fashioned books in my home. My daughters prefer them. My mother is 75 years old and loves that she has discovered the Kindle app. My daughters are 18 and 21 and only read the old-fashioned books.
How heartening to hear of teens that still love old-fashioned books! Sounds like your daughters have had great reading role models.
I love reading print books too, and solve the whole “stuck in a waiting room, changed your mind about what you want to read” problem by packing way too many books with me whenever I go anywhere. Whenever I get seduced by the idea of eBooks (and they do look pretty snazzy and a readable size on my iPad as opposed to my tiny phone), I remember about the internet going down! I definitely need to have something to read if the power and/or internet disappears! Plus, my shelves look beautiful too. 📚
I love reading in a book. I underline, tag, and make notes in the pages. I don’t mind reading digitally, yet there is that comfort of turning the paper pages and curling up to read. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
A kindred spirit! 🙂
