SOL18: Conquering the Mean-spirited Editor
Posted on March 20th, 2018
A play in one act
Characters:
•The Meanspirited Internal Editor (I.E.)
• Me, Myself, & I (Me)
Setting: Inside Me’s mind, just about any day, at any time
Scene One: New Year’s Day
Me: I want to make craft videos.
IE: Why? No one would watch them.
Me: I could create a YouTube channel!
IE: Are you really going to embarrass yourself by putting homemade videos out on the World Wide Web?
Me: I’m going to try regardless. It’s time I followed my own advice that I preached in the classroom…be a lifelong learner and accept new challenges no matter what age you are.
IE: Whatever…
Me: (two months later): Ha! I now have 54 subscribers and one of my videos has 449 views. More than a someone is watching, and I’m having fun!
IE: hmmm…
Scene 2: Sometime in February
Me: I’m going to join the Slice of Life Story Challenge and write every single day in March about something other than a card I made.
IE: Really? Ha! You know those other slicers are better writers.
Me: I’m not doing it to show off; I need motivation to follow through on my writing.
Two weeks in:
IE: See, I told you that you couldn’t do it. You’ve spent the whole day cleaning and baking and haven’t thought of a thing worth other people’s time to read.
Me: Just watch me. I’ll do what I had my students do: I’ll write about how hard it is to write until I come up with something to say.
IE: You’d actually publish that on your blog? Oh, my…
Me: Go Away! I’ve discovered these other slicers are people just like me who value written words and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow writers.
IE: crickets…
