SOL18: Conquering the Mean-spirited Editor
Posted on March 20th, 2018
A play in one act
Characters:
•The Meanspirited Internal Editor (I.E.)
• Me, Myself, & I (Me)
Setting: Inside Me’s mind, just about any day, at any time
Scene One: New Year’s Day
Me: I want to make craft videos.
IE: Why? No one would watch them.
Me: I could create a YouTube channel!
IE: Are you really going to embarrass yourself by putting homemade videos out on the World Wide Web?
Me: I’m going to try regardless. It’s time I followed my own advice that I preached in the classroom…be a lifelong learner and accept new challenges no matter what age you are.
IE: Whatever…
Me: (two months later): Ha! I now have 54 subscribers and one of my videos has 449 views. More than a someone is watching, and I’m having fun!
IE: hmmm…
Scene 2: Sometime in February
Me: I’m going to join the Slice of Life Story Challenge and write every single day in March about something other than a card I made.
IE: Really? Ha! You know those other slicers are better writers.
Me: I’m not doing it to show off; I need motivation to follow through on my writing.
Two weeks in:
IE: See, I told you that you couldn’t do it. You’ve spent the whole day cleaning and baking and haven’t thought of a thing worth other people’s time to read.
Me: Just watch me. I’ll do what I had my students do: I’ll write about how hard it is to write until I come up with something to say.
IE: You’d actually publish that on your blog? Oh, my…
Me: Go Away! I’ve discovered these other slicers are people just like me who value written words and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow writers.
IE: crickets…
You cast of characters had me chuckling from the outset.
I love your writing voice! So fun to read this slice! And bravo to you that you got out there and created your own videos! So impressive!
Fun approach to that dratted voice inside the head that doubts! Love the camaraderie also!
A YouTube channel– good for you for defying the commands of that yucky editor. You’ve given me some food for thought about expressing my own creativity.
Love this post, and you! Go away editor (or Negative Nelly) is right.
Hugs, Di
Thanks, Di. Thanks also for the very appropriate name for IE. 🙂
